Our Team History
Team Rose City is an organization of dedicated masters-level athletes who care deeply about the sport of bicycle racing and how it can be used to promote community involvement, physical fitness, and fun. TRC is one of the oldest continuous bicycle racing clubs in the West. With 40 members in 2007, we are one of the largest masters-level bicycle racing clubs in the Pacific Northwest. TRC was founded in 1951 and we are celebrating our 55th anniversary! TRC was the descendant of an earlier club founded in 1936 called the "Oregon Spokers", that dissolved in 1948. Some members from that club were the original 8 founders of Rose City Wheelmen: Phil Hohnstein (for whom the Mt. Tabor Circuit Race is named ), Tom Miller, Johnny Hart, John Backstrand, Sam Knutson, John Bennett, Chuck Baker, and Jerry Olsen. In 1990, we changed our team name and evolved into the current Team Rose City.
As Masters-level athletes who are also business professionals, parents, and community volunteers, we are fortunate to be able to financially support ourselves when it comes to bicycle racing fees and racing equipment, but also enjoy the opportunity to represent good, quality sponsors. Over our long history we have demonstrated our ability to follow-through with sponsors, and our seasoned ability to promote this exciting sport. Our goal is to promote the positive benefits of this sport, and to give to the youth of our community the opportunity to participate safely and with support from experienced adult cyclists.
TRC is currently, and has been for many years, sponsored by River City Bikes. Over the years, we have gotten many great team deals and wonderful all around support from this quality bike shop. We are also members of the Oregon Bike Race Association.
As a team, Team Rose City has been very successful. TRC riders compete in a wide variety of cycling events from road racing to time trials to track events to cyclocross to mountain biking. Over the years our members have garnered many national and state championship medals and awards in all of these different areas of bicycle racing.
